Dr. David Livingstone said of Victoria Falls,
‘It has never been seen before by European eyes, but scenes so wonderful must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.’
And boy, was he right?! From the moment you step onto the street, you are immersed in a misty spray that blankets the land; with a roar like thunder as your background music.
Visiting Victoria Falls is as enchanting as it is powerful, and it is a must-see destination to add to every bucket list. If you’re planning a trip to experience the magic for yourself, the following guide should serve you well in your adventure.

What To Pack
If you’ve never been to Africa before, you might be in for a shock. Depending on what time of year you are visiting Victoria Falls, the weather can be extremely hot and the mosquitoes can be out in force. You want to choose clothing and accessories that are going to ensure you are comfortable in all types of weather. And you’re going to want to pack light.
Clothing: when it comes to your clothing, choosing light cotton clothes in neutral tones. This type of clothing works best in the heat, however, we recommend you don’t choose white clothing as it gets very dusty in Africa. Although the days can be hot, the nights can actually be quite cold so include some long-sleeved shirts and pants. This will not only protect you from the cooler weather but also from the mosquitoes and other insects. A waterproof jacket, something lightweight, is also recommended to keep you comfortable in the early morning and at sundown. Not only that it, but it will also protect your clothing from the splash of the Falls (you could also take a poncho or raincoat). Make sure you pack some good walking shoes and finally include a wide-brimmed hat. Being close to the equator means sunburn is more likely.
Accessories: There is no doubt that when visiting a Victoria Falls you’re going to want your camera. Whether you have a quality digital camera, or you’re simply using your phone or iPad; make sure you include a waterproof bag, all the necessary adapters (and ensure you have the right adapters for Africa), your charges and spare memory cards.
Necessities: When it comes to packing the necessities, make sure you include sunscreen, first and foremost. Choose something that has a sun protection factor of between 30 and 50. Invest in a quality pair of sunglasses that have UV protector lenses; and insect repellent. You might also want to consider taking a first aid kit along with you, as you never know what might happen and it’s better to be prepared. Your kit might include medications, bandages, anti-nausea medication, tissues and anti-malaria prophylaxis. Unless you are staying at plush hotels, don’t forget to pack some soap, detergent for clothes and other beauty products.

When to Travel & for how Long
Victoria Falls is a great holiday destination at any time of the year. From the hot summers between August and April to the mild winters from May to August – deciding when you will visit should really depend on the activities you are planning along the way.
Keep in mind that rafting season generally closes in April or May, opening again around July or August; while other attractions (including Zambezi National Park) may close throughout the summer season as water levels drop and parts of the Falls dry out. Waters drop to their lowest at the end of November or early December so if you want to see the falls at its peak, your best bet is to travel in March or April.
If you’re planning on game viewing while visiting Victoria Falls, between August and November is the best time of year, and if you are looking to escape the mosquitoes, avoid the wet season between December and April.
Summer begins in August and is very hot and wet. It has temperatures averaging up to 34°C during the day, with the lows averaging around 18°C. Winter is mild and dry temperatures averaging 27°C in the day and 10°C at night.
You also need to consider is how long you’re planning on staying. You need to give at least four days, three nights, to be able to enjoy Victoria Falls at its best. This will give you time to see the falls from both Zimbabwe and the Zambia side, along with time for other activities without feeling rushed.

Getting There
When preparing for your trip to Victoria Falls one of the first things you need to consider is whether you plan to travel to the Zimbabwe side or the Zambia side of the Falls. The waterfall can be seen from either side, however, the Zimbabwe side is certainly the most popular as the views are unbeatable.
Victoria Falls town, home to the waterfall, has an international airport with several flights every day. The major route, which you would likely take, is from Johannesburg. You can book flights to Johannesburg from most capital cities in Australia and once you arrive, your connecting flight will take you through to Victoria Falls airport in Zimbabwe. Another option is to travel to Livingston airport in Zambia, depending on which side of the Falls you are staying.
The following airlines will fly you from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
- British Airways
- South African Airways
- air Zimbabwe
- fast jet (via Harare)
From Johannesburg to Livingston, Zambia
- Kulula Air
- South African Airways
You can also travel from Cape Town to Victoria Falls with Kenya Airways. Flights to Livingston are on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; while flights to Zimbabwe are Saturdays, Mondays and Thursdays. Ethiopian Airways flies from Addis Ababa to Victoria Falls airport, Air Zimbabwe flies between Harare and Victoria Falls, and the media will take you from Windhoek and Maun to Victoria Falls airport, while Proflight Zambia will take you from Lusaka to Livingston.
Getting Around
Once you arrive at Victoria Falls it’s easy to make your way around. Car hire is available from the airport, or your accommodation may include an airport transfer – make sure you ask upon booking. Otherwise, there are a number of companies that actually offer an airport transfer service; or you might choose private airport transfer, which is ideal if you’re travelling in the large group. If all else fails, you can grab a taxi from Victoria Falls airport; however, this service is not available from Livingston airport.
Once you arrive at your hotel, the best way to see the town is by stepping out in your walking shoes. The town of Victoria Falls itself is just a short walk from the actual waterfall and it’s easy to access. When walking around the town, keep an eye out for wildlife and also be vigilant when it comes to your safety and the security of your belongings. A free shuttle service operates from most hotels and lodges, taking visitors to the town centre and the Falls themselves. Bicycles are available for hire and you can also opt for a tour which will take you around the area, and beyond.
What To Expect
Victoria Falls is referred to as “the smoke that thunders” and from the moment you step into the town, you can see why. If you’re visiting when the water is high, you will immediately be met with a smoke of water, thundering from the Falls and throughout the region. Not only will you be greeted with spray and mist that can be seen up to 50 km away, but also with the noise itself; living up to the title of the smoke that thunders.
When you are visiting Victoria Falls themselves, prepare to be astounded. The sheer size of the Falls is not something you can prepare yourself for. The waterfall stands at 1708 metres width and 108 metres in height – the largest waterfall in the world (although this is debated by some).
Aside from the Falls themselves, one of the biggest drawcards is what is called a Lunar Rainbow – a natural phenomenon that is created when the light from a full moon is refracted by water particles in the air – creating a rainbow. This can be seen from both sides of the Falls.
Must-Sees
Victoria Falls: Named after the Queen of England, by explorer David Livingstone, the spectacular Falls are a must for every bucket list.
Lunar Rainbow: Also called a moonbow, a lunar Rainbow takes place at night on a full moon and is a must for travellers to the area if you’re travelling at the right time.
Devils pool: During the winter months when the water levels drop, a naturally occurring rock lip forms a barrier and creates a pool just before the edge of the Falls. This is not only great to see, but also a fantastic adventure option – if you dare to take a dip.
The region: The beauty of Victoria Falls does not only lie within the Falls themselves. Take a tour of the surrounding area, elephant watching, visiting the rainforest that hinges on the Falls and exploring the great Zambezi River and its gorges.
Must-Dos
Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, or you’re simply looking to relax, there are a range of Victoria Falls activities for everyone to enjoy.
Bungee jumping: from Victoria Falls Bridge, take the 110 metre freefall bungee plunge towards the rushing waters of the Zambezi River. With Victoria Falls as your backdrop, there is no greater destination in the world to dive. This is one of the highest bungee jumps in the world, and it’s also one of the safest.
Whitewater rafting: enjoy a tour down the Zambezi, with Grade 5 rafting. The rapids are long, the gradients are steep, there are big drops, high-pressure – and this is an experience that is guaranteed to get your heart racing.
Helicopter flight: one of the best ways to view the Falls and the surrounding area is with a helicopter flight. The Flight of Angels will give you a bird’s eye view of the largest waterfall in the world, and take you upstream for an extraordinary and unique game viewing adventure.
River Cruise: Zambezi River sunset cruise is an experience you never forget. Take a boat along the river, coming up close and personal with some of the local wildlife – everything from elephants and Hippo to crocodiles and giraffe. Sit back, relax and enjoy a cocktail or dinner on the cruise of your choice as you view one of the world’s greatest sunsets.
Game Drive: a visit to Africa, and Victoria Falls, would not be the same without a night game drive. Choose from one of the many tours that will take you into the surrounding bushland in search of Africa’s nocturnal delights.
Shopping: Victoria Falls might be a small town, but there are plenty of shopping options for tourists. Take a walk through the streets and visit the curios shops, art galleries, boutiques, and of course the markets where you can barter your way through some breathtaking woodcarvings, sculptures, paintings and other local art.
Spa: after a day of exploring or adventure-filled Victoria Falls activities, sit back and relax at the Royal Spa. Enjoy a massage or choose from a variety of beauty treatments available to help you indulge.

Local Culture And Customs
The culture in Zimbabwe is as diverse as it is intriguing. The majority of people in the Victoria Falls area came from the great family of Bantu speaking migrants who first came to Africa around 2000 years ago. Today the Shona culture is prevalent, and Victoria Falls is also home to a small number of other ethnic groups. There are 16 official languages recognised in Zimbabwe, however, the main language spoken is English, and you will find that the majority of people living in the area will be able to fully converse with you.
Keep in mind the following etiquette:
- If welcomed, a firm handshake with the right hand is a most common form of greeting for both men and women.
- When it comes to time, Africa is a laid-back country and being late is never an issue (unless you are part of a tour group). Transportation will rarely run on time.
- In the town, direct eye contact is normal when conducting business. However, if you travel to the rural areas nearby, females generally avoid eye contact when talking to men.
- Sticking out your tongue, using sounds with your mouth, licking your lips while looking at someone, or speaking to someone while your hands are in your pockets are considered to be rude gestures.
Visas
Because Victoria Falls lies on the border of both Zambia and Zimbabwe, you need to take into account the visas for both countries. Zimbabwe and Zambia both have three Visa categories, including:
Category A: countries that don’t need a Visa, such as many African countries and island nations
Category B: countries where visas are granted at the port of entry on payment of fees, including Australia, Canada, China and many other first world destinations
Category C: countries where a Visa must be obtained prior to travelling, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Syria (among others)
Be sure to ask your booking agent for confirmation of your requirements.
Currency
The US dollar is now the official currency of Zimbabwe. Most hotels, shops, restaurants and tour operators accept MasterCard and Visa (no American Express); and although ATM machines are available, they are not recommended. If you plan on doing any touring where you need to pay national park fees, you’ll need to pay with cash.
Safety
Keep in mind that when you visiting Zimbabwe and Zambia you are visiting a country where poverty is rife. Although not common, muggings and petty theft do occur so be vigilant and keep your possessions locked away or close.
Health
When enjoying your Victoria Falls activities; take plenty, or buy, bottled water and stay away from the taps. That includes when brushing your teeth and make sure you don’t drink any water when taking a shower. Watch out for uncooked foods, and ensure fruits and vegetables are washed with bottled water prior to eating. When it comes to your health, ensure you visit your doctor before travelling for malaria medicines. Do this at least six weeks before travelling. There are around 515 million reported cases of malaria every year and it can make one extremely sick – don’t become a statistic.
