Where to Go in Greece in May
May is a wonderful month to visit Greece. The weather is superb, prices are low, the summer crowds have yet to descend, and the locals are delighted to have you.
There are several places to put on your list for May. Island destinations such as Crete, Rhodes, Milos, Hydra, and the more popular Santorini and Mykonos are in their prime. Yes, it’s hotter in July and August, and the seas are warmer, but these destinations are more serene, as well as more affordable, in May.
Designer Journeys’ network of in-destination Local Designers will use their expert knowledge, local insight and travel planning skills to design your ultimate Greece experience. Begin designing your journey today!
With that being said, May is the perfect time to visit highly frequented destinations. The famous sites of Athens and Meteora are not yet overcrowded, allowing you picture-perfect photo opportunities without unfortunate photo bombings by fellow travellers.. Athens in May is a fine time to sightsee. The atmosphere is similar to April (link), and although the crowds do pick up slightly, it still doesn’t compare to the congestion during the summer months. Sunseekers will also be pleased by the increase in temperatures, yet the weather is still comfortable enough to fully appreciate the ancient sites. The beauty of visiting Athens in May is that you can explore every nook and cranny of the city with all services and businesses in full operation. An Athens city break is definitely worth your while during the late spring month. Because summer is the most popular time to visit Meteora and its plethora of cliff-top monasteries, go in late spring to avoid the crowds and to avoid the scorching heat of the high season. Walking or trekking between sites becomes more bearable in May, though you’ll still need a pair of sunglasses and some sun cream. During this time, Meteora’s shockingly green landscape dotted with fragrant spring flowers stuns with its jutting sandstone peaks, making it a highly worthwhile destination to visit in Greece in May. Explore the breathtaking wonders of Meteora on this 7-Day Mythical Greece tour. By May, Crete’s waters are warm enough to swim in, with a sea temperature of 19°C. Head to Balos Beach for a tan and a dip – the best way to spend a holiday in Greece! Balos’ lagoon has white sand and waters with vivid blue and turquoise colours. The water is shallow and warm. Because of millions of crushed shells, the sand has a lovely pinkish hue in many places. Beyond the rocks that mark the lagoon’s boundaries, the water is deeper and cool, making it ideal for snorkelling. The lagoon and surrounding area contain rare flora and fauna. Mix up your beach bum days with a bit of activity. Hiking is one of the top things to do during this time since the sun isn’t as strong as it is in summer, and Crete is renowned for its phenomenal trails. Here, grab your gear and tackle the Samaria Gorge, the longest Gorge in Europe! Take in the spectacular panoramic views on this 8-Day West Crete Gorges tour. May Day is not only Labour Day in Greece but also a celebration of spring. Blossoming flowers are at the heart of this holiday, as picking wildflowers and making wreaths are beloved activities on the day. On May 1st, bigger cities commemorate the day with processions. The city of Heraklion in Crete organises a lavish flower show, a custom that has been occurring for thousands of years. Typically though, Greek families venture out to the countryside, collecting flowers, flying kites, and picnicking under the brilliant sun. Join the Greeks on this special day, perhaps on this 8-day Outdoors Adventure in Crete, taking you from one wild countryside to another. Taking place on the 12th of May in Akrotiri is a classic Greek panigiri (a festival celebrating the patron saint of a particular region) honouring Saint Epiphanios. The church, where the festival takes place, is beautifully adorned with flowers. Here, a feast is enjoyed, which typically consists of fava beans, capers, sardines, and olives. Once everyone’s satiated, the evening continues with traditional dancing and plenty of music. Later on in the month, on the 29th of May, Akrotiri comes to life yet again, but this time so does Fira, in honouring Saint Theodosia. Towns celebrate with feasts, dances, and singing in the early hours of the morning. If you’re interested in participating in an authentic panigiri, get in touch with our Local Designers to organise a Greece trip that coincides with these local festivities! May offers some of the best weather of the year- warm, with bright sun and very little rain. The surrounding electric blue seas are just about warm enough for swimming while the spring flowers are blossoming. Athens sees temperatures soar to the mid-20s, and Crete is among the hottest islands to visit during May, with an average high of 24°C. 10 hours of sunshine paint the late spring days, and sea temperatures rise to about 19°C around the country – ideal for both sunbathing and sightseeing. Although the days feel like summer, evenings are cooler with mild temperatures, dropping down to around 14°C, so make sure to pack a light jacket or jumper.
