You'll arrive in the frenetic city of Tokyo, Japan’s current capital. You will be met by a representative and transferred to your downtown city hotel. You'll meet your English-speaking assistant at the hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant in the evening. Izakayas are informal Japanese bars where you can enjoy local snacks and alcoholic drinks.

Today, you'll embark on a day tour of this fascinating city with a local guide, making use of Tokyo's comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system. The day begins with a visit to the Edo Tokyo Museum to learn about how Tokyo changed from a small fishing village into the largest metropolis in the world. Then, you'll make your way to the Kiyosumi Teien, have lunch at a local restaurant, then visit Kokyo Gaien and finally, the Meiji Shrine.

Today, you'll join a shared coach tour today to explore one the ornate temples of Nikko nested in a forest in the hills north of Tokyo. Nikko is located along Japan's Romantic Road at the entrance to Nikko National Park and is famous for its lavishly decorated shrines of which you will visit three: Toshogu Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasul; Nikko Toshogu Museum; and the much older Futarasan Shine.

Tokyo to Matsumoto to Takayama

This morning, you'll meet your guide and take a Limited Express train to Matsumoto where you'll visit the incredibly beautiful Matsumoto Castle, one of the original and most complete of the handful of medieval castles that exist in Japan today. Afterwards, you'll stroll through Nakamachi-dori, a street lined by preserved old style buildings including white painted warehouses. After lunch here, you'll proceed to Takayama on a 90-minute scenic bus ride through the Japan Alps.

You'll meet your guide and take a stroll to the Miyagawa morning market where locals come to sell artisanal goods and fresh produce. You'll then visit Takayama Jinya which provides a fascinating insight into the Shogunate and sample sake at one of Takayama’s small breweries. You'll then ride the scenic Hida Wide View Express train to Nagoya before switching to the Bullet Train to Kyoto. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Kyoto by subway.

This morning, you'll join a shared coach tour and discover the charm and tranquillity of Arashiyama, located on the Western outskirts of Kyoto. You'll visit sightseeing spots in Kyoto such as the World Heritage Site Tenryu-ji Temple, Bamboo Grove, and Arashiyama. For lunch, participants will have a Buddhist vegetarian meal inside the Tenryu-ji Temple grounds. You'll then enjoy a rickshaw ride near the Togetsu-kyo Bridge and visit the Matsuno-o Taisha Shrine.

You will be transferred from your hotel in Kyoto to Nara by a private vehicle with a local guide before heading to Kumano area. For 74 years during the 8th century, Nara was Japan's capital and many of the temples and shrines built at that time still remain. You'll visit Todaiji temple, Kasuga Taisha, Nara Deer Park and Isuien. From Nara, you will catch an express train around the Wakayama peninsula to Shingu in time for dinner at your leisure this evening.

This morning, you'll join your guide and travel by train and bus to the Nachi Taisha Shrine. The shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites that exemplify the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that is particular to the Kumano region. You'll visit the the Buddhist temple of Seigantoji and have lunch at Bistro Bonheur before heading back to Shingu to explore Hayatama Taisha. You'll then pick up your bags and head to Kawayu Onsen for your traditional kaiseki dinner.

Kumano Kodo Hike & Transfer to Osaka

Today, you'll hike the Kumano Kodo with your guide and a local guide. You will hike the short Dainichi-goe route of the Kumano Kodo from Kumano Hongu Taisha to Yunomine Onsen. The Hanakake Jizo is on the ridge, and on the eastern slope is Tsukimigaoka-jinja. After a short walk, you will visit the other main pilgrimage site, Hongu Taisha. Then, you'll complete the loop of the peninsula back to Osaka and enjoy Dotonburi street nightlife and dinner at a local restaurant.
