Rio's Little Africa

Take the morning to relax and enjoy the beaches, or go shopping. Then visit Little Africa in Rio which is unknown to many. Discover this part of the city on a historic walk through the African Heritage Circuit including the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valongo Wharf where you'll learn about the Transatlantic Slave Trade from its main Rio port. Then you'll visit the slave cemetery and Institute for New Blacks. Finish the day at a samba party in Pedra do Sal.

The Coffee Valley

After a 2 or 3 hour journey from Rio, you'll arrive in The Coffee Valley in Valença and Vassouras. This area accumulated a huge amount of wealth that was generated through enslaved Africans who were brought here to work in the coffee plantations and sugar cane mills. Your tour will be mediated by a descendant of the Africans who arrived at the ports of Rio who will share the stories and historical facts of the Coffee Valley.

Make your way to Quilombo do Campinho. A quilombo is a settlement where Africans and their descendants would meet to withstand slavery. The communities here maintain a strong connection with their culture and past. A resident guide will show you around the community and tell you the history of the quilombo, showing you the key places of remembrance, a reforestation project and several artifacts. Have lunch at a community restaurant serving fresh fish.

On a paradisiacal island in the state of Sao Paulo, Ilhabela Island, you'll meet the oldest black community in the state and experience the joy of their cultural assets translated on tastes, custumes and rhythms. With luck you can participate on local celebrations such as the Congada, a traditional dance from Ilhabela. Then you'll go to Castelhanos Bay where African slaves were trafficked illegally, today it hosts a range of tourism experiences.

A full day of immersing yourself in Afro-Brazillian culture. You'll visit a Babalorixa to understand a little bit of the Candomble spiritual Ioruba practice. Visit a master of capoeira, maybe watch a class and learn about the history behind the sport. Go to São Joaquim Fair to meet the Soteropolitan people, spicy tastes and experience their culture. Finish in Liberdade, where many Afro-descendants live, home to the famous Afro carnival party, Ile Aie.
