Day 4
Ajanta Caves
Close
After breakfast, proceed to the Ajanta Caves. As Buddhism slowly declined, this UNESCO World Heritage site was abandoned and gradually forgotten. But in 1819, a British hunting party stumbled upon them and their remote beauty was soon unveiled. Within the 30 rock-hewn caves, the murals show scenes from the Buddha's life and from the Jataka Tales, which recount stories of Buddha's previous incarnations as an enlightened being. The cave paintings are considered masterpieces of ancient Indian art.
