FERRY FROM SPAIN, 5-DAY TANGIER, CHEFCHAOUEN, VOLUBILIS, MEKNES & FÈS

Customisable Itinerary
4.0 • (1 review)

Trip Overview

This compact five-day tour is ideal for those travellers who are visiting Spain but who also wish to experience a varied taste of northern Morocco.

Arriving by short ferry ride from Spain, crossing the straits of Gibraltar, certainly adds to the excitement and anticipation of this very fine Moroccan Adventure. Your northern Morocco itinerary offers a wonderful combination of high mountains, the blue city of Chefchaouen and the imperial cities of Meknes and Fes.

You'll begin with a thrilling countryside journey, through the mighty Rif Mountains, passing close to the city of Tetouan and on to the Blue City of Chefchaouen, a delightful hillside settlement where much can be easily explored on foot. Think narrow streets and cobbled alleyways, colourful hidden gems of experience and photo opportunities at every turn.

A clear highlight of the tour will be the last few days exploring the Imperial Cities of Meknes and Fes. Both are quite remarkable old capital cities with much to savour and enjoy. Fes has a captivating intensity of activity in and around the Old Medina in great contrast to that of Chefchaouen’s easy ambience.

This contrasting sights, sites and experiences tour is costed using very pleasant 3* accommodations. However, if wished, the tour can be costed using 4* and/or 5* accommodations if you wish (for either the whole tour or for parts of it).

You are collected by your driver from the Tangier port for your transfer to Chefchaouen. Your journey takes you through the impressive Rif Mountains with their high peaks, deep valleys and heavily forested slopes of cedar, cork, oak and pine. The highest peak is Mount Tidirhine at 2,456 metres and it is usually snow-capped in winter. There is rich, productive farmland to be seen too on the lower slopes with many traditional villages that blend organically into the landscape.

This small city is totally charming and today you'll explore it on your own. Nestling as it does in the Rif Mountains, its name is apt, meaning, peaks; they are all around this hillside settlement. Chefchaouen is an ideal place in which to simply relax and wander, taking in the wonderful ambience of the place. Chefchaouen’s medina area has many charming narrow passageways where blue paint dominates.
Ras el ma spring, the town’s river source, can also be visited on foot within the settlement.

Continue your northern Morocco itinerary by driving to Fes via Volubilis and Meknes. Volubilis contains Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins, some of which are now undergoing conservation. Volubilis is an excellent example of an important outpost city on the edge of the Roman Empire and now holds World Heritage Site status. In Meknes, there is much to appreciate in this ancient Imperial City: Moulay Idriss, Bab al-Mansour, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the Old Medina.
