Embark on a self-drive tour to the coast of Uruguay on this five-day journey from Montevideo!

Beginning in the capital itself, you'll touch down amongst the European charm and cosmopolitan flair of Montevideo, pick up your rental car and journey down the past to Punta Del Este, one of Uruguay's most popular beach resorts.

You'll spend a few days here visiting the sights and soaking up the magic before journeying north to La Paloma, stopping at the village of Jose Ignacio and Laguna de Garzón on the way.

Today, you'll pick up your rental car at the airport and travel south today to the most famous seaside resort of Uruguay, Punta del Este. Located on the Atlantic coast, Punta del Este is often referred to as “The Pearl of the Atlantic”. The seaside resort boasts many beaches, homes, yachts, harbours, high-rise apartment buildings, and fancy restaurants, bars, and clubs. It is definitely one of South America’s most glamorous places and fills up with international visitors during the summer.

Today, you'll have the day free to enjoy the beach or discover the surroundings. Casa Pueblo is a very special building, built by the artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. It was built over eight floors directly on the cliffs of Punta Ballena. In Punta del Este, there is also the museum of the Ralli Foundation which exhibits an amazing collection of sculptures and paintings, including some works by Salvador Dali. Alternatively, you can venture to Isla de Lobos or Isla Gorriti, one of the nearby islands.

This morning, you'll drive to La Paloma. The drive itself only takes two hours but there are plenty of sights along the way. Laguna de Garzón is an extensive lagoon system found on the way. Due to its connection to the Atlantic Ocean, the area offers a mosaic of unique environments of great scenic and cultural value in a small area and a great variety of flora and fauna. In the afternoon, you'll arrive in La Paloma, a coastal town known for its beautiful sandy beaches and old town.

Today, you'll have the entire day free to spend as you wish and discover the surroundings of La Paloma. The seaside resort La Pedrera of La Roche is just north of La Paloma, on a small, narrow peninsula called Punta Rubia; it has an exclusive and cosmopolitan character. Alternatively, there's Laguna de Rocha, a natural reserve declared by UNESCO, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. More than 200 species of birds can be found here, including the endangered Chilean flamingos.
