6-Day Marrakesh, High Atlas and Sahara Experiences

Customisable Itinerary
4.0 • (1 review)

Trip Overview

On this tour from Marrakech, you travel through the High Atlas and on to the great sand sea area of the Chegaga dunes in the Sahara and crossing the vast Iriki salt lake. The itinerary’s routing is much more interesting than is usual and it includes a range of truly special, unique experiences. Rather than following the asphalt routes for much of the trip, special sections take you on to piste, the traditional gravel roads.

The High Atlas are splendid, with awesome views of mountain peaks and deep, water cut valleys. Perhaps see Toubkal (4,167m) as you cross the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. Within the High Atlas, you'll see the traditional villages of the Berber people, the mountain people whose settlements cling to the steep valley sides. Their various farming activities will be seen and much will be learned about their culture and traditions.

Within the Sahara, in the Chegaga area, the sand sea offers classic Saharan scenes. Crossing the Iriki salt lake is simply an exhilarating thrill of a ride. On your travels here you’ll encounter Bedouin herders. Their traditional, nomadic life leads them around the Sahara seeking water and grazing for their camel herds. With a camel trek to view the sunset from atop a Chegaga sand dune, you’ll fully appreciate this most exotic location.

By travelling into more remote areas such as this tour offers, you'll witness normal, everyday life for the mountain and desert peoples. Many experiences in the tour are necessarily planned but, hopefully, many others are by joyous "happenstance". This tour is designed to let you see real Morocco, its magnificent landscapes and its cultures and for you to immerse yourself in it all.

This wonderful and wide ranging tour is costed using very pleasant 3* accommodations. However, if wished, the tour can be costed using 4* and/or 5* accommodations if you wish (for either the whole of the tour of for parts of it.

The High Atlas contains dramatic scenery on a grand scale. Only an hour's drive south from Marrakesh, you enter their foothills. High peaks and deep, water cut valleys abound. Look out for Toubkal, the highest peak (4,167m). The mountains are home to the Berbers, who live in this beautiful but challenging land. Their villages cling on to steep mountain slopes. Aït Benhaddou, by contrast, was once a chief's stronghold.

To the Sahara, Land of the Bedouin

Travelling over the Tizi-n-Tinififft Pass in the Anti Atlas and entering the Draa River valley, the contrast between barren and fertile land could not be more dramatic. From bare, rocky mountains to fertile river soils is a complete colour change! The Draa is famous for its date palmeries, a very high-value crop. Beneath the palms, small plots are intensely cultivated. Soon you are in the Sahara at Chegaga's extensive sand of sea; time to take a camel ride to your Bedouin Camp.

Skirting the Sahara and Iriki Lake Bed and into the High Atlas

This is a very adventurous day indeed. You are away from it all, amongst wilderness, in an environment that is very unforgiving. It is awesome. The Iriki area is a dried up lake bed, fascinating in its landforms and its changing climate. Fossils are to be found in ancient rocks that were once formed on the floor of a great ocean.

Ouarzazate > The High Atlas and Marrakech

Climbing back over the High Atlas never fails to impress - not only in the stunning landscapes and vistas but also the amazement as to how the Berbers can make a living from such a demanding environment. Water is vital for the farmed land to produce and for livestock to thrive. Winter rains are always hoped for and if a winter snowpack builds up too then this slowly releases water in the Spring and early summer months. A visit is made to an Argan Oil Co-operative in Taddert on descending from the Tizi-n- Tichka Pass (2,260m).
