Drive to Punakha

After breakfast, drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass, where we will stop to catch a glimpse of the Himalayan mountain range and visit the temple of the Divine Madman on the way. On arrival, you'll go straight out to start your sightseeing tour, visiting temples, and the suspension bridge with stop for a picnic in the park. At night, you'll be free to relax in your accommodation.

Phobjikha sits at an average altitude of 3000 metres; it is a wide and beautiful valley, designated as conservation zone within the Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park. Phobjikha is a natural habitat for wildlife, including nesting grounds for endangered black-necked cranes that migrate from Central Asia in the winter (late October and stay till March). Spend the day embracing this natural playground with long walks.

In the morning, you'll travel to Bumthang, deep in the Bhutanese valleys. This region is the religious heartland of the nation and home to some of its oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries. Tales of Guru Padmasambhava and the tertons “religious treasure-discoverers” still linger in this sacred region. When you arrive, you'll immediately set out to learn more.

Day 5

Today, you'll spend most of the day travelling back to Paro. This scenic drive will take you through Trongsa, Punakha and Thimphu. You'll have the odd stop to eat and enjoy the views. When you arrive in Paro, head out to stretch your legs after a long day before dinner.

After breakfast, we will hike up to one of the key highlights in Bhutan today! Tiger's Nest, Taktsang Monastery is accessed by a one hour hike to the cafeteria, a vantage point with stunning views of Taktsang Monastery with prayer flags adorning the cliffs. This is the site where Guru Padmasambhava landed on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. After lunch, we will retrace our steps to visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan.
