Trip Overview

During your travel to Australia, you will immerse yourself in one of the country's great walks and discover ancient outback landscapes, abundant wildlife and the chance to sleep under the stars on this nine-day adventure!

Beginning in Adelaide, you'll have a couple of days to acquaint yourself with South Australia's capital before heading off to Arkaba in the Flinders Ranges for your five-day walk across the outback.

Over the course of five days, you'll walk 45 kilometres on varying terrain alongside spectacular landscapes and abundant wildlife. Each night, you'll be staying in signature walking camps and sleeping on permanent swag decks, designed to both protect you whilst enabling you to sleep under a canopy of stars.

Your field guides will accompany you on each leg of your walk guiding you to your base each night where you'll enjoy hot bush showers and gourmet meals match with South Australian wine!

Upon arrival, you'll be met by your driver and transferred from the airport to the hotel in a private Sedan. After checking into your hotel, you'll have the rest of the afternoon free to spend as you wish. Once known as the 'City of Churches', in between the bars, pubs and city lanes, you'll find plenty of churches. This morning, you will be met in the lobby of your hotel before hitting the open road to Arkaba. Heading north from Adelaide, you will bypass small country towns. You'll stop for lunch on the banks of Bumbunga Lake, then your journey will take you past the infamous Snowtown, Redhill, Port Pirie and Port Germein before another short stop in the historic railway town of Quorn. You'll arrive at your Arkaba Homestead by 5pm in time for a guided experience followed by a three-course dinner.

Today, you'll set off on foot through the basin of Wilpena Pound before walking onto Arkaba's private property and descend into Black's Gap Signature Camp. Your breakfast will ensure you are sufficiently fueled and ready to cover the 13 kilometres through the flat interior of Wilpena Pound and a gradual 1.5-kilometre ascent to the rim of the pound, climbing 200 metres ahead of a steeper descent of about one kilometre into Arkaba wilderness and Black’s Gap Signature Swag Camp.

    You are welcome to bring your own water bottle for use if you would prefer to the water bladders built into your day pack. Other items to bring include: Hiking boots offering good ankle support and are well worn in Light long pants such as zip-off leg types or shorts Light wicking shirts (with SPF recommended) or light cotton shirts, preferably long-sleeved Camera and spare batteries (no charging facility available until you reach Arkaba Homestead on day three) A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen Small personal first aid kit including blister protection and insect repellent Good socks and gaiters or sock protectors for sock protection (if walking in shorts) A spare pair of shoes for wearing around camp in the evening Head torch for evenings in camp, with spare batteries Warm clothing for the winter months including a hat, thermals, scarf, gloves and fleece (May-August). Walking poles are optional depending on your preference Windcheater / waterproof jacket Binoculars for wildlife and bird viewing Swimming costume to use the outdoor pool at Arkaba Homestead (in season)

Day 6

Today is a challenging hike through creeks and broken country approaching the foothills of the Elder Range to Elder Camp. The first two kilometres will follow the famous Heysen Trail through Black’s Gap itself. The last leg of the day will take you west into rolling hills culminating in a sharp climb to the summit of the Red Range where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views. A hot bush shower, dinner, and another special night under the great Australian sky await.

Today, you'll walk across varying terrain through Mallee and cypress forests before ascending the beautiful Red Range for views across the neighbouring ranges and crossing Arkaba Creek to arrive at the Arkaba Homestead. As you move southeast, the first few kilometres will be amongst hill country at the foot of the Elder Range. Then, you'll cross Salty Creek and ascend the Red Range and down onto the banks of the Arkaba Creek. You'll arrive at Arkaba Homestead mid-afternoon.

This morning, you'll leave Arkaba Homestead and travel through gorgeous outback towns with wine tasting and lunch in the Clare Valley. You'll make your way through the historic outback towns of Quorn, Wilmington, Mount Remarkable, and Melrose, all famous for their nature-filled valleys and river beds. You'll then head from Melrose into the beautiful Clare Valley, a region famous for its wines. You'll enjoy lunch and some wine tasting before continuing south to Adelaide.
