Here you'll witness many giants of the ocean with large pods of dolphins in migration season. Blue whales are found just a few miles offshore. Dating back to the 5th Century A.D., this astounding city on the summit of a high outcrop was the royal citadel of King Kassapa for over 18 years. In the evening, take a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. Dominated by the ancient Minneriya tank, you'll see wild elephants, which are often present in huge numbers, surrounded by wading birds.
