What You’ll Need to Pack for Your Morocco Trip

Morocco is predominantly a Muslim country, so you should be mindful of what you pack to make sure your clothing is conservative. While in the bigger cities, you dress as you would anywhere else, you’ll find that the local people in Morocco are covered up, especially the women. 

Many tourists will wear shorts and tank tops, but this may bring unwanted attention, so it’s best to err on the modest side to avoid this. Carrying around a scarf that can double as a shoulder or head wrap is especially useful for several different eventualities, such as entering mosques. 

The weather can be hot in the day and cold at night, especially so in the desert and mountainous areas so make sure to bring a jacket and some loose cotton clothing that you can layer up when you visit Morocco. Other than modest clothes, make sure to have comfortable walking shoes, sandals, your camera and a good day bag.

Day-by-Day Breakdown of the Perfect Two-Week Morocco Itinerary

Day 1 – Begin Your Morocco Itinerary from Casablanca

Winding streets that ooze tradition mixed with a touch of modernity is the perfect way to describe Casablanca. On arrival, you’ll be met by your driver who will take you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll have some time to explore the city and the range of cafes, restaurants and boutiques along La Corniche. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, La Corniche is Casablanca’s extensive boulevard which runs the length of the coast of the city offering great views of the Hassan II Mosque.

Day 2 – Explore Casablanca

No Casablanca itinerary would be complete without a visit to the famous Hassan II Mosque with its 200-metre high minaret and exotic interior with wood, marble, carved stone and gilded ceilings. Today, you’ll have the day to explore the Old City Medina of Casablanca as well as the French-built Habous. In the later afternoon, you’ll leave for the magical blue city of Chefchaouen. 

Day 3 – Discover the Blue-Washed City of Chefchaouen & Travel to Fes

Even if you only had time for a Morocco itinerary of one week, Chefchaouen is a place that you would want to make sure you visit. Known as the ‘blue city’ for its blue-washed houses, doors and streets, Chefchaouen has a beautiful laid-back ambience that oozes from its charming alleyways and bustling Medina. In the evening, you’ll arrive in the imperial city of Fes. 

Day 4 – Fes City Tour

Centred around its fascinating Old Medina, Fes is an impressive ancient city home to an entrancing maze of streets, markets and iconic landmarks. This one-day Fes itinerary will lead you on a journey to learn why this colourful city has long attracted scholars, scientists, craftsmen, artists and more. Beginning with the Islamic University, regarded as the scientific capital of Morocco, you’ll visit the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, the iconic Fes leather tanneries with their distinct smell, the Fes pottery district, and you’ll snap a photo in front of the famous Bab Mansour Gate. 

Day 5 – Onwards to the Merzouga Desert

Leaving Fes behind, you’ll travel over the Col du Zad at 2,178 metres in the Atlas Mountains to the desert. En route, you’ll stop in the towns of Azrou, Midelt and Erfoud, each with unique features which make them fascinating stops. Your final stop before you reach Merzouga will be Rissani where you can visit a traditional souk. Arriving in Merzouga, the gateway to the desert, you’ll hop aboard a camel or 4×4 and make your way to your Berber camp as the sun sets on the impressive Erg Chebbi dunes. 

Day 6 – Travel to Boumalne Dades via the Todra Gorge

A night spent sleeping under the stars with the silence of the desert surrounding you will be made even better as you complete it by watching the sunrise over the dunes in the early hours. After a traditional Berber breakfast, you’ll hit the road for Boumalne Dades. The journey to the Dades Valley is a special one; you’ll hike in the 300-metre deep Todra Gorge, travel along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and you’ll pass by traditional villages.

Day 7 – Venture off the Beaten Track on the Way to Ouarzazate

Set amongst palms, farmlands and rivers, the picturesque Dades Valley is home to many kasbahs. As you travel along these ancient roads to Ouarzazate, you’ll observe the weird and wonderful land formations which punctuate your journey. You’ll stop at a traditional cave dwelling to meet a local family and share some tea. After a traditional lunch, you’ll stop briefly in the ‘Valley of Roses’, a village bordered by abundant rose bushes which are used in the cosmetic industry for perfumes and soaps.

Day 8 – Explore Ait Ben Haddou & Begin your Marrakesh Itinerary

Today it is time to lay eyes on one of the most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Morocco, 8 days into your trip. Dating back to the 11th century, Aït Ben Haddou sits on an important ancient trade route between Marrakesh, Ouarzazate and the Sahara. Having formed the backdrop and filming locations for the likes of Game of Thrones, Ait Ben Haddou is a very famous kasbah in Morocco. 

For the latter half of the day, you’ll be travelling to Marrakesh, over the Atlas Mountains through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. In the evening, you’ll visit the lively Marrakesh Medina.

Day 9 – A Day in Marrakesh

If you choose not to begin your Morocco itinerary from Marrakesh, then you must spend some time in this sensational city during your trip. Marrakesh’s vibrant sights and experiences will overwhelm your senses and leave you fascinated by this city. With your local guide, you’ll spend the day visiting the iconic landmarks of the ‘Red City’ – Jemaa el-Fna Square, the Medina, an Apothecary, the Koutoubia Mosque, Ben Youssef Madrasa, a Koranic School, Saadian Tombs and Bahia Palace. 

Day 10 – High Atlas Mountains Magical Tour

Today, your itinerary to Morocco becomes that little bit more special as you spend the day heading deeper and higher into the High Atlas Mountains. You’ll reach Azgour and the Anogal Valley where you’ll be greeted with incredible scenery of steep mountainsides dotted with Berber villages. You’ll make your way up to Adaghas at 2,000 metres for lunch accompanied by outstanding views. The goal of the day is to reach the “Mouth of the Earth” Gorge, a haven of remote peace in the heart of the High Atlas. You’ll take a stroll in the gorge before returning to the red city. 

Day 11 – Beautiful Beginnings & Jbilet Mountains Tour

This morning, your day will begin by soaring up and away over the stunning Marrakesh Plain in a hot air balloon. The morning will be so silent that you’ll be able to appreciate the beauty below you fully. Back down on the ground, the rest of the day will be spent exploring the beautiful Marrakesh Plain and Jbilet mountains; you’ll visit traditional villages, observe farming activities and enjoy meeting some locals. Of course, you’ll be treated to a good dose of delicious traditional Moroccan food to keep your belly full throughout the day. 

Day 12 – Onwards to Essaouira

Today, you’ll leave the red-baked city of Marrakesh behind as you make your way to the western seaboard. En route, you’ll encounter a scene rarely observed anywhere else in the world – goats grazing high up in argan trees on the nuts! You’ll stop to observe this unique phenomenon as your guide tells why they do it. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Essaouira and have the opportunity to discover the delights of the Medina and the active fishing harbour. 

Day 13 – Travel Back to Casablanca

Most Morocco trip routes over 10 days will result in returning to the destination that you set out from. Today, you’ll have the morning to explore the charms of Essaouira a little more before you travel back to Casablanca for your final night. If you’d prefer to spend more time in Casablanca, you can leave straight after breakfast.

Day 14 – Your Morocco Road Trip Itinerary Comes to an End

Today, your wonderful 2 weeks in Morocco comes to an end. When you are ready, your driver will take you to the airport for your departing flight.
